The Ogust convention

A 2NT bid over a weak-2 opening asks opener to describe his hand more precisely. The responses are as follows:

ResponseMeaning
3CLow HCP and weak suit
3DLow HCP and strong suit
3HHigh HCP and weak suit
3SHigh HCP and strong suit
3NTSuit headed by AKQ

In the above, low HCP means 6-8 while high HCP means 8-10. On the other hand, a weak suit means holding one of AKQ while a strong suit means holding two of AKQ.

If responder bids a new suit after opener's response to Ogust, this shows a strong hand and is game forcing.

If responder bids 4C after opener's response to Ogust, it is Gerber and implies no major fit.

The Ogust system is still ON if opponent has overcalled the weak-2 opening. If the Ogust convention is interfered, the I-DO rule applies.
