Invitational (re)double

In each of the following cases, a (re)double of opponent's bid that is between 2-of-our-major and 3-of-our-major invites to game

• When a major fit has been reached
• When partner makes a weak 2M opening

Responder usually chooses between 3M and 4M.


If opponent doubles after partner responds to a takeout double, then a redouble is invitational, e.g.

• (1S) > X > 2H > (X) > XX

On the other hand, if opponent bids a suit after partner responds to a takeout double, then a double is for penalty, e.g.

• (1S) > X > 2H > (2S) > X
